Access Statement

At The Gibraltar Rock, we aim to ensure that all our guests enjoy comfortable facilities and are made to feel welcome. We are committed to treating all guests, employees and visitors equally and according to their individual needs.

This Access Statement addresses common accessibility considerations and provides practical information for guests who wish to visit. When making an enquiry or booking, please let us know well in advance of any specific requirements so we can do our best to accommodate you.

The Gibraltar Rock is part of The MCN Collection and is privately owned and operated.

Getting Here

  • The venue is located on East Street, Tynemouth, adjacent to The Priory.

  • Tynemouth Metro Station is approximately 500 yards away. Regular bus services also serve the area.

  • Pay and Display car parking is available on Front Street and East Street, approximately 20 metres from the venue.

  • The venue does not have dedicated accessible parking.

  • Several local taxi companies operate in the area — we are happy to provide details on request.

  • Directions are available on our website.

Entrances

  • The south entrance has level access with no steps or handrails. The double front doors can be opened wide to facilitate entry.

  • The north entrance has a gradual ramp with no steps or handrails. The double front doors can be opened wide to facilitate entry.

  • The rear of the venue has level access through triple bi-fold doors with no steps or handrails.

  • East Street operates a one-way traffic flow system (south to north) with pedestrian and cycle lanes. It is lit at night.

Ground Floor

  • The ground floor is level throughout, with a mix of wooden flooring and carpet.

  • All public rooms are well lit.

  • The bar height is 1.17m with seating available adjacent.

  • Moveable seating is available throughout. Most chairs are without arms, though chairs with arms are available on request.

  • There is background music in all public rooms.

  • Full waiter service can be provided on the ground floor on request.

  • Assistance dogs are welcome on the ground floor and in outside areas.

First Floor Restaurant (TIDE)

  • Our first floor restaurant is accessible by staircase with handrails.

  • We do not have a lift to the first floor.

  • Full waiter service is offered in the first floor restaurant.

Facilities

  • Public WCs are located on the ground floor with no steps. One fully accessible WC is available with a wide door and support aids.

  • The fire alarm system is sonic. It does not have flashing lights. Staff will assist with evacuation if necessary.

Additional Information

The Gibraltar Rock is a listed building. While this places some physical constraints on what we are able to modify, we are fully committed to complying with current regulations and providing the best possible experience for all guests.

We have made every effort to make the ground floor as accessible as possible. Regrettably, due to the nature of the building, complete access to all areas may not be possible for all guests, including those who are fully wheelchair dependent.
